This is what makes you hungry

This is what makes you hungry
A particular subset of neurons located in an enigmatic region of the hypothalamus plays a central role in regulating appetite and body weight, a new study suggests.

The findings, published in the journal Science, illuminate a previously unknown neural mechanism of feeding regulation and offer new perspectives on understanding changes in appetite in mice.

According to the researchers, including Jingjing Sun from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, knowledge of the function of a region of the hypothalamus called the nucleus tuberalis lateralis (NTL) is scarce.

Scientists are still seeking to better understand it as damage to this brain region in patients results in marked declines in appetite, and in rapid loss in body weight.

To further explore any role the NTL may have in regulation of appetite and body weight, the researchers observed the behaviour of somatostatin (SST) neurons in the NTL using a mouse model.

The researchers found that the SST neurons were activated by both hunger (following overnight food deprivation) and after administration of the hunger hormone, ghrelin.

Selective activation and deactivation of the neurons, using both drugs and optogenetics, demonstrated that eating behaviour could be controlled. Activation increased eating behaviour, while inhibition significantly reduced it, the researchers said.

Total elimination of the neurons altogether resulted in decreased daily food intake as well as gradual weight gain, they added.

The researchers said that according to the study’s findings, SST neurons are required for controlling healthy eating and body weight.

Simple and easy ways to plate like a chef

Though every chef have their own style and art of plating, but there are certain skill set that you can learn and try your hands at home. Here is a list of simple and easy ways to plate like a chef.

Plate: Choose the plate keeping the dish in mind. Some chefs prefer dark plates to present colorful and bright dishes while some choose white or light colored ones. Here, the only unbreakable rule is that warm plates for hot food and chilled plated for cold.

Sauce: This one not only enhances the flavor and taste of the dish, but also improves the appearance. It’s the consistency of the ingredient that gives you the scope to play around. A light drizzle or dash of sauce can create magic, try it.

Main meal: If you want to follow the traditional rule, then place it at the centre and if you prefer the modern trend, go for side positioning accompanied by line or arc or random position but keep in mind that each piece is treated with equal attention.

Accompaniment/sides: This component completes the meal and gives you a chance to provide different texture and color to the dish. The quality has to be adequate enough to be visible on the plate.

Garnish: This adds the last sparkle and concludes the plating process. It could be an artistically hand crafted edible mini item or could just be a sprig of fresh herb or micro greens.
